Akila is a classical dancer from South India and has been actively involved in learning, performing and teaching Bharathanatyam dance for more than 20 years. She has been teaching classes since 1998 and has been actively involved in promoting the South Indian rich cultural heritage and the fine art of Bharathanatyam dance among the Indian American youth. With ancestral roots from the villages near Chidambaram, in South India, Akila learned her dance from well known Guru Panchavarnam, a disciple of the Bharathanatyam prodigy, Balasaraswathy.
Akila has performed in the Chidambaram Natyanjali, Chennai Doordarhsan and several other programs all over India. Her students have performed in several cultural events in Northern Virginia, Maryland and DC Vicinity. Akila specializes in Kalashetra style
As a successful High Tech professional with Masters in Applied Electronics and Bachelors in Industrial Electronics. Akila dedicates her time in teaching Bharathanatyam to younger generations with strong passion for its rich and divine heritage.
ii) Salangai Arts Inc. – About the corporation
Akila established Salangai Arts Inc, a small business incorporation registered in the state of Virginia, in January 2009 as a classical south Indian dance school fully dedicated to teaching and promoting Bharathanatyam dance for students of ages 5 and up. Since its inception in 2009 the dance school has seen tremendous growth and recognition and currently has an enrollment of about more than 50 students. Students of Salangai Arts while learning the classical dance are also provided opportunities to showcase their talent in various cultural and promotional events throughout the year in the Northern Virginia area.
