The Annamalai University was founded in 1929 by the munificence and single-minded devotion of the farsighted and noble hearted philanthropist and patron of letters, the Honourable Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, Kt., LL.D., D.Litt. Since then the Annamalai University has grown into a premier, unitary and residential teaching university.
Annamalai University today is spread over an extensive campus of about one thousand acres and has the Faculties of Arts, Science, Indian Languages, Engineering and Technology, Education, Fine Arts, Agriculture, Medicine and Dentistry and, in all, they comprise 48 departments of study.
Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir M.A Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, Kt., B.A., D.Litt., the founder Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984 assiduously nurtured the growth and development of the University of devoted his life to realize the aims of his noble father.
Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, B.A., D.Litt., D.Sc. the present Pro-chancellor, the distinguished son of Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar, is a philanthropist and patron of sports, and has fulfilled the dreams of his illustrious father by building up the Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Sciences. Under his dynamic leadership, the University is well on its way to become one of the frontline Universities in India.
The university has had the unique good fortune of having a succession of eminent Vice-Chancellors to guide its destiny. The university is all set to grow from strength to strength under the stewardship of the present Vice-Chancellor,Dr.M.Ramanathan, who is a reputed educationist, well-known demographer, an able administrator and an ardent promoter of extension activities. His contribution in the current demanding sphere of distance education is very significant and has received wide appreciation.
In 2006 Annamalai University opened its branch in Toronto Canada, thus making history. The Annamalai University Canada Campus became the first and only worldwide recognized university to offer Degrees and Diplomas in India Music and Dance outside of India and Sri Lanka. Apart from Degree and Diploma programs, AUCC now offers MA in Music and Dance as well as PG Diploma in Nattuvangam as well as Certificate Courses
and Grade Level Exams. In 2010, AUCC expanded its programs to USA, Europe,
Australia, New Zealand and South Africa
